 The Sermon on the Mount – A Sermon Like No Other Week 21 – Righteousness and Morality You have heard that it is said, you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:43-45a) The truths of the Sermon on the Mount were lived out in Jesus' life. To teach how to love requires a loving example. Jesus was this living demonstration of love. Love for neighbors can be simple to accomplish – but love for those who are enemies is another issue. Jesus teaches that displaying love indiscriminately is the pathway of common grace and the true followers of Jesus should display this love to everyone. This “sincere goodwill” should be our calling card to the world. After all, Jesus says here that this action reveals our son-ship with the Father.
