Women In Discipleship
Weekly Devotional – 2010
The Red Thread Series

A wonderful “Red Thread” of salvation runs throughout the Bible, and each week we are looking at a different book of the Bible to see that Thread that leads to Jesus and God's perfect plan for redeeming mankind to Himself.

AUGUST - WEEK FOUR

Book of the Bible:  Haggai
Theme of the Book:  A call to the Jews to finish the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem, with the emphasis on their need for true worship, holiness and faith in God
Main Character(s):  Haggai, Zerubbabel, Joshua, the people of Judah
The “Red Thread”:  Haggai addresses Zerubbabel in this prophetic book, which in turn points to Christ in that He is the direct descendant of both Joseph and Mary. (Matt. 1:12-13)

Key Verses:  Haggai 1:3-4, 7-8 and 2:23
Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet saying,
'Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses
while this house lies desolate?'
Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'Consider your ways!
Go up to the mountains, bring wood and rebuild the temple,
that I may be pleased with it and be glorified,' says the LORD.
'On that day,' declares the LORD of hosts,
'I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant,'
declares the LORD, 'and I will make you like a signet ring,
for I have chosen you,' declares the LORD of hosts.

APPLICATION:
God did judge Ninevah 100 years after their repentance.
The generation after Jonah fell back into wickedness.
Nahum came to pronounce final doom on this nation.
When repentance is applied in truth and obedience, judgment is withheld.
This is what Jesus requires of His people.
  • In my daily routine, how focused am I on worship, holiness, and faith in Christ?
  • What do I need to change so that Christ is First in my thinking and actions?
