TO BEAR HIS NAME
Weekly Insights into the Names of God
(Taken from the To Bear HIs Name Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)

This year we have been looking at the names of God:
  • January - ADONAI = our Sovereign Ruler; Almighty Master; Lord over all!!
  • February - JEHOVAH = He is Self-existent, Eternal, Righteous, Holy, and YHWH-I = AM WHO I AM.
  • March - ELOHIM = He is the Creator God; actively involved in the world He made.
  • April - EL ELYON = signifies the exaltedness, supremacy, and overwhelming majesty of His deity.
  • May - EL ROI = the all-seeing God
  • June - EL SHADDAI = God Almighty, complete, perfect; having integrity
  • July - JEHOVAH TSIDKENU = LORD our Righteousness; altogether Righteous
  • August - JEHOVAH ROHI = LORD my Shepherd; the Great Shepherd
  • September - JEHOVAH SHALOM = The LORD of Peace
  • October - JEHOVAH ROPHE = The LORD Who Heals
  • November - JEHOVAH JIREH (Rah) = The LORD Who Provides
We close out the year with: JEHOVAH SABAOTH – The LORD of Hosts - Week 1

First we see LORD as being YHWH or Elohim. The word Hosts (massive noun) can be used of a person, thing, of war especially, or a campaign, army, or troop.

This name JEHOVAH Sabaoth is used in Scripture and can refer to human armies, celestial bodies, or heavenly creatures.

It is a divine title and emphasizes the LORD as sovereign over all the powers of Heaven and earth, and especially over Israel.

We will see that the warfare most emphasized is a spiritual one. This name will not be found in the first five books of the Bible.

The first time we see JEHOVAH Sabaoth is in I Samuel 1:3:

Now this man (Elkanah) would go up from his city yearly to worship
and sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh.

APPLICATION:

  • Warfare has become more commonplace for the Christian today. How can I let JEHOVAH Sabaoth fight for me today?
  • In what must I stop “fighting” in order for JEHOVAH Sabaoth to win the day?
