WALK OF GRACE - My Spiritual Service of Worship
(Taken from the Walk of Grace Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)

November - Week 3:

God always looks at the heart. He wanted His people to offer sacrifices of thanksgiving from hearts overflowing with worship, regardless of their circumstances. Even when we don't feel thankful, we can give thanks to God as a sacrifice or offering from a heart focused on Him. It's not always easy to be thankful, but that is what makes thanksgiving a true "sacrifice" in the hard times.

Today, let’s take time to meditate on a passage in the New Testament that teaches us how to live thankful lives. As you read, remember our two main texts for this study. (What a delightful time of year to remember the thanksgiving we have in Jesus!)
  1. Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. Romans 12:1

  2. Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Ephesians 5: 15-17 gives us some good food for thought: So be careful how you live. Don't live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don't act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.

These words describe how we are to live in this world of change and uncertainty. Being in God's Word, meditating on His holiness, listening and acting in accordance to His will describes a worthy life lived for Him. Paul continues these thoughts with: Be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (NLT)

Paul experienced more trials and hardships than most of us can imagine. Yet, he still wrote this command for Believers to give thanks in ALL things. He knew what he was talking about. He understood what it meant to offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving. He also knew how awesome God is, and that is why he could always give thanks.
.

APPLICATION:
  • Am I currently giving thanks in everything?
  • How does Paul's example encourage me to give thanks in all my circumstances?
  • What am I especially thankful for today?
