WEEKLY DEVOTIONALS – 2011
The Bible – Absolute Truth – Week 44

By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish
along with those who were disobedient,
after she had welcomed the spies in peace.
Hebrews 11: 31

Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab,
Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth,
and Obed the father of Jesse...
Matthew 1:5

Rahab lived in Jericho, which was a fortified city that the children of Israel would have to battle in order to enter into the Promised Land of Israel.
The Children of Israel were not alone.
From Joshua 5:15, The Captain of the LORD’S host gave the order to march around the city seven times in seven days, and were instructed to utterly destroy everything (Joshua 6:21a) …then to burn it with fire.

Dr. John Gastang, director of the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem, excavated ruins of Jericho from 1929-1936.
Under the ashes and fallen walls were abundant food stuffs, including wheat, barley, dates, lentils - all turned to charcoal - untouched, uneaten and dated to 1400BC. Gastang also observed that the walls fell down flat - outward down the hillside.
He also found that a double wall existed 15 feet apart, linking houses built across the top.
Rahab occupied one. We know this because the Bible tells us so.
Her story of Redemption and faith is a lesson in God’s forgiveness and purpose ... from her line would come Messiah!

And she (Mary) will bear a Son;
and you shall call His name Jesus,
for it is He who will save His people from their sins.
Matthew 1:21

THOUGHTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK

Rahab was redeemed because of her faith.
Jericho and its inhabitants were destroyed because of their disobedience.
Jesus came to save His people from their sins (disobedience).
Jericho’s disobedience brought destruction - Rahab brought Redemption!
  • Whose side are you on?
  • Will you share the Good News of Salvation today with a world in need?
