Women In Discipleship
Weekly Devotionals for 2007 – The Psalms

October - Week 41
Weekly Reading:  Psalm 59
(Go to www.BibleGateway.com for complete text)

"But I will sing of Your power, Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning; for You have been my defense.Psalm 59:16

Being reminded of past anguish and how God's strength and deliverance transformed the lament to rejoicing is a worthwhile exercise.

David, shortly after becoming king, appears to have written this Psalm of assurance.

David had been pursued by Saul for a long time. Other men, without (Philistines) and within Israel, included his pursuers of harm. David, in a quiet moment, reflects upon one of those events, and suddenly this Psalm bursts forth in great gratitude toward God.

Evil men were continually pursuing him, yet now David sees clearly the divine protection provided him in those earlier days. (Refer to verse 16)

God was David's Protector. We can see it in Scripture over and over again. David later pens these words as a reminder of God’s continual protection against evil men, schemes and calamity. How about your life today? What past experience can you now look upon and see God's handprint of encouragement, protection, and assurance to you? (v.17b)

We all need to be reminded of past protections and be ready to praise God "for God is my defense, my God of mercy" and yours as well!

May we be encouraged daily in Him!
