Women In Discipleship
Weekly Devotionals for 2007 – The Psalms

January - Week Two
Weekly Reading: Psalm 3
But You, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head.  - Psalm 3:3

The Historic background to Psalm 3 takes place when King David had to flee from his son, Absalom. We all have troubles. David is in trouble from none other than his own son! He is literally running for his life (v. 1-2).

Isn’t life like that sometimes? Have you ever felt like that?

David’s Psalm to God is clear. God is a shield to David. He knew that his faith was sure. His God would deliver him through whatever would come. Surely evil did come for David. It wasn’t, however, a good thing that transpired for his son.

Yet, David recognized that worldly goods, fame, home, name, or people were not where his joy would be manifested. From verse 3, he was exactly right! The truth is that the Lord was his glory, and the Lord was the One and only Person who would lift his head during, and at the end, of the trial before him.

David had assurance in the Lord! He could have lost everything the world holds dear. His hope was in God alone! That was a powerful shield for him and can be for us as well.

What trial are you facing today? Can you be like David and say: “But You, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head”?

May we each be encouraged by David’s words for us today. Troubles come and go, but the Lord is faithful at all times to be holding us in His watch-care.

To God be the glory.

Director of Women in Discipleship
