Weekly Devotionals 2006

Week 31

“We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our hearts before Him in whatever our hearts condemn us, for God is greater than our hearts and knows all things.”
1 John 3: 19-20

John is amazing in his ability to teach us things that help us to identify our true heart in practice. These verses refer to the previous verses that talk about helping others.

We all from time to time may have doubts concerning our salvation. We may question our heart attitude regarding our personal responses to others, their need and our own personal wishes and needs. With this may come some discouragement and doubt as to our genuine salvation. What does John say? “But God is greater than our hearts,” He is the One who did the transaction on our behalf. We are encouraged by John to rest in Him (Jesus) and allow the Holy Spirit to bring to our remembrance the position we have in Christ. If sin has blocked our progress in the faith, John’s words in 1 John 1:9 ring loud and clear: “If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The Holy Spirit works this out in us.
Then there are also four more things that can help in remembering: 1) our practice 2) our works 3) our obedience 4) our love for the brethren. These things will reveal to us what we need to know in order to live in the Light of our salvation in Jesus Christ. John makes it clear. These things reveal our heart toward God.

QUESTIONS TO PONDER
Of the four things listed above which one is in most need of repair in you today?
The most vital indicator of salvation is conviction of sin. What do you need to confess today?
The last few words of this passage state: “God…knows all things.” What are your thoughts regarding these poignant words?
Certainly food for thought this week for all of us.
Blessings in Jesus,
Sandra Davis for the Women in Discipleship team
