Weekly Devotionals 2006

Week 12

"But the one who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His name sake." 1 John 2: 11-12

Have you ever tried to walk in your house at night when it is very dark? I have. I put my hands out to not run into anything. Walking in the dark is a very good example of the person who hates someone else. Hatred is very ugly. The person who demonstrates the quality of hatred is "blind." I have seen and heard these people. They are difficult to be around. Their speech, facial expressions, manors and customs all are shaped by this one quality.

As a true believer I cannot be around or even watch people who have this within them.
Even a little hate is ugly. Speaking with someone recently share how she hates someone else, I saw her face grow cold, her speech become hard and her heart begin to darken. This indication of her spiritual nature challenged me to share with her the warning of these verses. My hope is that God will show her the victory she can have if she chooses to walk in the Light of the forgiveness and love of Jesus Christ.

The amazing love Christ poured out for her and for all of us who believe can remove the darkness of hate and put love for others in it's rightful place where God delights.

This testing is not easy. It takes devotion, prayer, study, practice and Holy Spirit power. Blindness is a terrible thing in unbelief.

Questions to ponder:

How is your spiritual eyesight for forgiveness toward others?
John says in verse 12 that our sins are forgiven for His names sake. Have you sought forgiveness for the hate that tries to pull you into darkness?

As God's kids we have His light continually. How are you keeping the Light of Christ burning in your heart today?

May the testing of our hearts be found pure and forgiving every day,
Sandra Davis for the Women in Discipleship team
