    DAY FOUR

    1. Read Ruth 2:17-23, and describe what unfolded next in this story.

      Verse 17:

      Verse 18:
(Notice that Ruth kept her leftovers from the meal with Boaz and gave them to Naomi.)

      Verse 19:
(It's interesting that Ruth was not aware of Boaz as a relative until this point. In Ruth 2:1, the writer mentioned Boaz as a relative, but Ruth did not know this. Also note in 2:8 that Boaz called Ruth "my daughter." He knew who she was! In verse 10, Ruth was again bewildered as to why he would show kindness to her, a foreigner. Boaz, without mentioning his kinship, told her he had heard about her kindness to her mother-in-law.)

      Verse 20:
(The mystery was now revealed to Ruth about who Boaz was.)

      Verse 21:
(The harvest season of barley and wheat lasted several months, usually through April and May.)

      Verse 22:

In Ruth 3:9 and 4:1, we see a unique term. This book revolves around the theme of the "kinsman redeemer." Boaz described Ruth as a woman who was compelled to care for her mother-in-law and therefore modeled the role of "kinsman redeemer" in her household. Boaz recognized this quality in Ruth. He was moved by her willingness to believe in the God of Israel.

    2. What were Naomi's instructions to Ruth in 3:1-5?

    3. Read 3:6-13 and describe the reply Boaz gave Ruth that night.

    4. Note two particular characteristics of Ruth in verses 10b and 11b. (Prov. 31:10)

    5. What did Boaz need to do in order to "redeem" Ruth? (Lev. 25:25; Deut. 25:5-10)

    6. What confidence did Naomi have in Boaz for resolving this matter? (v.18)

    LESSONS AND APPLICATIONS

    1. Family is very important in the eyes of God. How do you view your family in light of this compelling story?

    2. God's laws were designed to protect widows. What have you done to help the widows of your community? What can you do?

    3. When God speaks on behalf of another, the child of God is compelled to respond. When has God spoken to you through someone else or through His Word, and you took action to do what He asked?
